Day 182

Sermon on the Mount

Read Matthew 5-7

The people of Israel were waiting for the Messiah, their king. Matthew begins by showing how Jesus Christ was a descendant of David. But he goes on to show that God did not send Jesus to be an earthly king, but a heavenly king. His kingdom would never end.

In Chapters 5-7 of Matthew, Jesus in the beginning of his public ministry had called his first disciples and delivered the Sermon on the Mount in Chapter 5. The sermon was given on a hillside near Capernaum and probably covered several days. Jesus made it clear that position, authority and money were not important in his kingdom but what really matters is faithful obedience from the heart. We must keep in mind that in order to find hope and joy, the deepest forms of happiness, we need to follow Jesus no matter what the cost.

In these three chapters of Matthew Jesus gave so many directions for living in his kingdom. He taught about such things as anger, divorce, prayer, worry, the way to heaven and so many other teachings to show us how to prepare for life in his eternal kingdom by living properly right now Jesus lived what he taught and we must practice what we preach. He taught us the true ingredients of faith and how to guard against a fruitless and hypocritical life.

The message of Matthew is clear: Jesus is the Christ, the King of kings and Lord of lords. We need to make sure we make Jesus the Lord of our lives.
